my gear
Guitars:
2004 Gibson Custom Shop ‘57 Historic Reissue
- This is my new baby. I bought it from a guy on The Gear Page after it fell out of its case and took out a small chunk of finish. It’s definitely noticeable up close, but you can’t see it from a distance. It’s got upgraded WCR pickups (Crossroads neck + Darkburst Bridge). I love this guitar.
1994 Fender American Standard Stratocaster
- This is the first real electric guitar that I ever bought. Sure, I had a few beaters before this one, but this is the only one that I kept.
2006 Reverend Jetstream 390
- I actually just sold this one, so I need to update the family photo.
Signal Chain (effects/amp):
Guitar -> Teese RMC Picture Wah -> Ernie Ball VP Jr. -> Peterson StroboStomp -> BYOC Script 90 -> Barber Silver LTD -> RHFX Pure Boost -> Barber Small Fry -> Line 6 Echo Park -> Reeves Custom 6 -> 1×12 cab w/Hellatone 30

Hi there!
Interesting reading on your site. I play guitar and fiddle at our church, played R & R for about 25 years and have been on a tone quest for about 35 years. Play a Carr Rambler now but am looking at the Goodsell Super 17. I see that it was recently used on stage at one of your performances, did you get a chance to listen to it?
The Goodsell sounded incredible. The other guitarist in our band just ordered a Super 17 head and 2×10 cab. I’ve been thinking about getting a head, and I am really excited to put his through the paces. He also ordered a Stulce and he should have it this weekend. Meanwhile, I’m still playing through my Pro Jr. =/
I’ll update once I’ve tried out the new amps.
I am in the same boat you’re in, but in a much smaller church (probably 150 on a good Sunday). Interested in how the Reeves does for the chimey, semi-clean sound that dominates worship music. The sound clips on the Reeves site sound mid-heavy to me (which is sort of the signature for Hiwatts anyway). Are you still happy? On Goodsells, I’ve demoed them and they sound great. Considering that, too, especially because it has a master volume. I prefer non-masters, but the sheer db issue may force me to convert. And, sorry I missed it, but what are you using for an isolation box? I don’t use one and I’m in a nonstop debate with our extremely cool minister on how loud the guitars should be.
Peace,
Bryant
I have a love/hate relationship with the Reeves lately. It is quite mid heavy, and I have it EQ’ed to compensate for that. I have the high and bass at around 2-3:00 and the mids are around 9:00. I’m thinking about getting an AC-15 clone to replace it.
Maybe I should experiment with speakers first. I’m currently using a Hellatone 30 from Avatar (which is basically a broken-in Celestion G12H30), but I’m thinking about trying a Weber Alnico Blue Dog.
My iso box is basically a big cube lined with foam. Our rhythm guitarist built one for each of us. I wish that it was big enough to hold a 2×12 cab, but it works pretty well with my 1×12.
Oh, and the Goodsell is fantastic. The guy that built the boxes uses one, and the cleans are probably the best that I’ve ever heard.
I liked the description of the amp you’re getting from Ceriatone. Do you mind me asking what they’re going to charge?
He quoted me $570 for the completed amp with tubes. There’s no cabinet, so you have to figure that into the cost as well as shipping from Malaysia (which should be ~$100). It’s not exactly cheap, but a comparable hand-built amp from an American builder would be significantly more expensive.
Hey there,
Like your gear! Semi-inspired by you as well as a need to focus more on worship music, I’ve started my own blog. I’ll be visiting you frequently!
Be blessed.
Very nice site you have with an interesting point of view. Some nice gear too - nice Les Paul and no, dink is certainly not noticeable from these little pics anyway.
Your Jetstream 390. Why did you sell it? I’m really thinking about buying one just like it. Any advice?
It was a great guitar, but it was pretty redundant. It covered a lot of the same sonic territory as my strat. I have really been wanting a MacBook, and since the JS390 was somewhat expendable it had to go. If you want a really nice, versatile strat-style guitar with cool cosmetics, definitely go for it.
Thanks for the advice man. I did order one. Just like the one you had.
Sweet. Did you get an older one with the Wilkinson trem, or does it have the stop tailpiece? The Wilkinson is probably the best floating trem that I have ever played - definitely better than the stock trem on my strat.
Let me know how you like it.
I’m a pastor/guitarist. FUN. Love the Reverend. Too bad you sold it. I play a Reverend Buckshot pretty often in our church. If you get on the Reverend Forum look up Northvalley1.
