MacBook thoughts January 5, 2008

Well, I’ve been messing with this thing for about 10 days, and I really like it.

For one thing, this is my first Mac with an Intel processor, and it’s significantly faster than my iMac G5, even though they have similar specs (2GHz processor, 1GB RAM). Certain applications that haven’t been designed to run on the Intel platform run in software emulation mode, which eats up the CPU big time. Office ‘04 runs pretty slowly in emulation, and I’m hesitant to even load up my version of Photoshop CS. I’m sure that it’ll run like a three-legged dog.

I’m sure that things will improve when I max out the RAM. Here’s a tip, don’t buy RAM from Apple – they overcharge big time for their upgrades. For example, upgrading to 4GB of RAM costs over $700 (!!!) from Apple, but you can buy 2×2GB sticks from OWC for $100. I can’t imagine that buying “official” memory from The Mothership is going to be $600 better, can you?

I’ve heard some people complaining about the new version of the Mac OS (Leopard), but I have had no problems yet. Sure, I’m not crazy about the translucent menu bar or the 3D taskbar, but it’s not a dealbreaker.

Here’s a pic of my current desktop (notice the Dharma Hydra Station logo icon): Click for full sizeMacBook

I got this wallpaper at a really cool site called InterfaceLIFT. They also have icons and stuff. Another good place to go for icons and wallpaper is Iconfactory.

More to come…
