I got a new amp a couple of weeks ago - the Reeves Custom 6. It is replacing my old Fender Pro Jr. Reeves started out as the American counterpart to Hiwatt, a British amp company started by Dave Reeves. Their amps were used by guys like Jimi Hendrix (although he typically played Marshalls), David Gilmour (Pink Floyd), Alex Lifeson (Rush), and Pete Townshend (The Who) among others.

The sound of these amps kinda falls into the Marshall/Vox category. I’m not big on using words to describe tone like “woody,” “creamy,” or “swirly,” but I will say that the Custom 6 captures the chime and edge-of-breakup of a Vox AC-15 style amp. It’s a 6-watt amp, which means that it was designed to be cranked without peeling the paint off of the walls. It has 2 inputs, high and low - referring to the amount of gain that you want to use.

I’ve used it in worship and rehearsal several times over the last couple of weeks and I think that I’m close to finding the sweet spot. I’m using the low input with the gain at around 1:30. This gives me some flexibility in the tone that I get. If I pick lightly I get a real chimy Edge-like clean. If I really dig in, I can get some nice crunch. I think that I’m going to have to add a pedal to get some serious crunch for the “chugga-chugga” palm-muting stuff. I’m thinking about getting a Fulltone OCD for that purpose.

I sold my Fulldrive 2 last week. I just wasn’t bonding with it. I got some okay lead tones, but to be honest, my Bad Monkey sounds just as good (if not better). The boost function was pretty weak, IMO. Maybe I’ll give it another shot down the road, but probably not anytime soon.

I ordered a new wah over the weekend and it should be in today: the RMC Wheels of Fire, made by Geoffrey Teese. I am so ready to plug it in. I haven’t had a wah in a couple of months, and it’s been pretty rough without it. I’ll update once I’ve had an opportunity to play it.
